Wilhelm Josef Franz Ritter von Leeb (5 September 1876 – 29 April 1956) was a German field marshal and war criminal in World War II. Leeb was a highly decorated officer in World War I and was awarded the Military Order of Max Joseph which granted him the title of nobility.

In 1897 he joined the 4 th Field Artillery Regiment and during World War One he served as an artillery officer. Leeb stayed in the army after the end of the war. By 1929, he was a major general. In 1934, Leeb was appointed commander of the 2 nd Gruppenkommando (Army Group Headquarters 2015-11-29 · Leeb had the chance he had been looking for, and requested that he be relieved of his command. Hitler complied, and von Küchler succeeded to the command of Army Group North on 18 January.
