A Brief Seattle Monorail History. Seattle Center Monorail was built for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair to provide a crucial link between the fairgrounds and the amenities downtown. Construction began in April of 1961 by Alweg Rapid Transit Systems, who received the bid when it offered to underwrite the entire cost of construction.

The term originates from joining "mono" and "rail" from 1897, possibly from German engineer Eugen Langen, who called an elevated railway system with wagons suspended the Eugen Langen One-railed Suspension Tramway. Colloquially, the term "monorail" is often used to describe any form of elevated Seattle's Alweg Monorail, the only remaining Alweg-built monorail trains left in operation. For the Disney fans out there that don't already know, Alweg had The Seattle Alweg monorail - the last still existing original Alweg line in the world - is today known as the "Seattle Center Monorail" and has been in continuous operation since its inauguration in 1962 is operated by Seattle Monorail Services. Both Alweg trains have with great dedication by the Seattle Monorail Services team been refurbished and technically updated to today's safety requirements.

The Monorail provides a fun, quick, and convenient link between downtown Seattle and Seattle Center, home to the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, Museum of Pop Culture, The Children’s Museum, and a host of theatrical and cultural experiences. Walt Disney asked Alweg to design the original 8/10-mile beamway around Tomorrowland and enlisted a young designer, Bob Gurr, to design the train. With this collaboration, the Disneyland Alweg Monorail System opened on June 14, 1959, as the first daily operating monorail system in the Western Hemisphere. Wandering Seattle – The Alweg Monorail: The 1962 World’s Fair or Century 21 Exposition, which it was billed back in the day, was opened via the airwaves by President Kennedy on the east coast to a crowd of 12,000 people in the stadium on the fairgrounds.
